How to find healthier alternatives to a product
A score is more useful when it comes with an option. That's what the alternatives on each product page are for.
How alternatives are chosen
- Same category — cereal for cereal, peanut butter for peanut butter. If the closest category holds almost nothing, Novaz widens the search one level up.
- At least 10 points higher than the product you scanned. Food also has to reach at least 50, a Good score.
- Cosmetics aren't held to that 50, because a single moderate ingredient such as fragrance caps a score at 49 — instead, a suggested cosmetic must have at least 70% of its ingredients recognized, so a half-read label can't look clean.
- Compatible with your diet and allergy preferences, if you've set any.
- Best scores first, without duplicates.
Use them
- Scan a product and scroll to the alternatives on its page.
- Tap one to see its full score and reasons.
- Star it to find it again, and scan it in the store to double-check.
The Recs tab gathers them
You don't have to remember which scan needed a replacement. Every product you scan that comes back under 50 gets a shelf in the Recs tab: the product itself with its score, and a row of the better products found for it, best first. Tap the heading to reopen what you scanned, or See all for the full list. Scans that already score well don't appear there.
Free vs. PRO
Everyone sees up to 10 alternatives per product. Novaz PRO shows up to 15.
FAQ
- Why don't I see any alternatives?
- Either nothing in the same category scores enough higher, or the product already scores well. Very specific categories can also have few products in the database.
