How to check the ingredients in your shampoo, lotion or sunscreen
Personal care products go on your skin every day, often several at once. Checking them takes a few seconds with a scan.
Check a product
- Scan the barcode on the bottle or box.
- Look at the score and at any ingredients marked orange or red.
- Tap an ingredient to see which concern it falls under — for example allergen or irritant.
- Check the alternatives for a product in the same category that scores higher.
Ingredients people often check
- Fragrance or parfum — a common cause of skin allergies.
- Preservatives such as some parabens and formaldehyde releasers.
- Some sunscreen UV filters, which are studied for hormonal and environmental effects.
If it isn't found
Cosmetic databases are smaller than food ones. If a product isn't found, you can add it with photos, including one of the ingredient list.
FAQ
- Can I check makeup and deodorant too?
- Yes — any cosmetic or personal care product with a barcode and an ingredient list can be looked up.
