How to check if a product is vegan
'Plant-based' on the front of a pack doesn't always mean vegan. The ingredient list is where animal-derived ingredients show up.
Ingredients that aren't vegan
- Milk-derived: casein, caseinate, whey, lactose, butterfat
- Gelatin — from animal bones and skin
- Carmine or cochineal (E120) — a red color made from insects
- Shellac (E904) — a glaze made by insects
- Honey and beeswax
- Some vitamin D3, which is made from lanolin in sheep's wool
- Isinglass — from fish, used to clarify some beers and wines
Vegan vs. vegetarian
Vegetarian products can include milk, eggs and honey; vegan products can't. Novaz has a separate preference for each.
Get vegan alerts
Turn on the vegan or vegetarian preference and Novaz warns you when a product's ingredients don't fit. When a product's data can't settle it, check the package.
FAQ
- Is sugar vegan?
- Sugar itself comes from plants, but some cane sugar is filtered with bone char. Labels rarely say so; certified vegan or organic sugar avoids it.
