Deodorant vs. antiperspirant: ingredients to check before you buy

The deodorant aisle mixes two different kinds of product, and the labels don't always make the difference clear. Knowing which is which makes it easier to choose — and to read the ingredient list.

The difference

• Antiperspirants reduce sweating, usually with aluminum-based compounds that temporarily plug sweat ducts. In the U.S. they're regulated by the FDA as over-the-counter drugs.
• Deodorants don't stop sweat. They mask or neutralize odor, often with fragrance, alcohol or antibacterial ingredients, and they're regulated as cosmetics.
• Many products are both — the label will say 'antiperspirant deodorant.'

What about aluminum?

Concerns that aluminum in antiperspirants causes breast cancer have circulated for years. The U.S. National Cancer Institute says it is not aware of any conclusive evidence linking antiperspirant use to breast cancer. Choosing aluminum-free is a personal preference — just know it won't reduce sweat.

Ingredients to check if your skin is sensitive

• Fragrance or parfum — one of the most common causes of skin allergies from cosmetics.
• Alcohol — can sting, especially right after shaving.
• Baking soda — common in 'natural' deodorants; its high pH irritates some people's underarms.
• Essential oils — natural, but some are frequent allergens.

Check a deodorant with a scan

1. Scan the barcode on the stick or spray.
2. Look at the score and any ingredients marked orange or red.
3. Tap a flagged ingredient to see its concern — allergen, irritant and so on.
4. Check the alternatives for a better-rated option in the same category.
